People interested in history in general, and history of western civilization in particular should checkout "Passion of the Western Mind" by Richard Tarnas. It's an excellent text on history of ideas, which have shaped western world. Starting from classical (greece) world the book takes you through how christianity evolved and what impact classical thought and Rome had on development of christian world-view (and also how christianity affected Roman empire). Then it traces development of modern and postmodern world-views, taking one through Renaissance, Reformation and Scientific-Revolution.
What I liked best about it was the bird's eye view given of various ideas and people who have had an impact on western civilization. So, for example, it doesn't go into details about Kant's philosophy but gives an overview of his place in history of philosophy, the problems he was trying to solve and his impact on future generation of thinkers. A very good reference book for further exploration.

hey mp ...
thanks for the heads-up. that's a cool perspective .. looking at not just the people with the big-ideas, but placing them in some historical context.
great stuff .. i'll look fwd to checking out this book !
hey mp,
thanks for the reco man...just the kind of book i was looking for, considering that my familiarity with european history is pretty fuzzy...
So here you are :)) Nice review. I was just remembering another one of your book recommendations from a while back :)
In case you are wondering I still haven't read Raag Durbari. The only way I can get the book now, is if I order it from an unfamiliar website.
I've been able to get Mrinal Pande's Hamka Diyo Pardes (recognized her name from Star News) and also a book of Premchand's selected short stories. I can't help but remember that you left out Premchand rather intentionally. I read Shatranj Ke Khiladi I couldn't help but constantly compare the story to what I remember of the movie.
hey mp...nice blog man...loved all the posts...will frequent it more often now...:-))
